The Ibanez SR256B Bass proves that a great instrument doesn't have to cost a fortune to look good, feel good and sound great. The Ibanez GSR series was developed for players who want Ibanez quality in a more affordable package. Not only do these basses look and play better than everything else in their price range, but their rigorous inspection, set-up and warranty is the same as Ibanez's more expensive models. The Ibanez GSR series offers a great range of models for all sorts of player and playing styles.

I already own multiple basses, all of which are of the 4-string/5-string/U-Bass variety, but I've been wanting to get into 6-string, and this GSR256 seemed like a cost-effective way to achieve that. Pricing at Revolution Music was better than at any other Aussie seller I could find, so, having read (and watched) all the reviews/demos I could find on the web, I decided to take the plunge. In short, this is a surprisingly impressive bass. Set-up as delivered to me was the best I've ever seen straight out of the box — I suspect that was a combination of attention to detail at the Ibanez factory, and some tweaking at Revolution before I picked it up. Action was beautifully low (as I'd requested), and intonation was almost perfect (just a very slight tweak to one string needed). The instrument is well-presented (I got the walnut finish one, although I have seen white variations of this model) — there's not anything I can criticise in the finish or construction or hardware. Comfortable to play, even for someone making the transition from 5-string — sure, the neck is wider (as expected), but it's taken me only a day or two to settle in. The provision of a pickup selector/blender combined with treble/mid/bass cut & boost knobs makes for a wide tonal variation. I had read comments that the GSR256 was a little neck-heavy but, to be honest, I haven't felt that at all — with a decent wide strap to support it, I can't detect any tendency to neck-dive.To sum up, then, this is one darn good bass, and it will become my main instrument, even supplanting my favourite 5-string. If you had handed me this 256 and asked me to nominate its price, I would have guessed a lot higher, and it's certainly given me an appreciation of Ibanez quality, even at the budget end. Heartily recommended.
